  1. Tara Said,

Hi - I was wondering why you would use your hands for stirring the kefir? Is there a benefit to this? I’ve seen it before. I always use a wooden spoon. Just curious to know if there is a benefit to using your hands to a wooden spoon?

  2. pockets Said,

Gee, Tara, good question. I have never actually thought about it before. I can think of three reasons off hand. One is that I have a vague notion that either we or the grains (or both) benefit from the direct contact. We tune into each other to the benefit of both in some vital way. I have no scientific proof of this, of course. But I experience it as being true and our grains have performed beautifully for many years with such encouragement. A second reason is that we wouldn’t be able to get the very small grains out of the strainer with a spoon anyway so we might just as well use our hands for the entire procedure. And the third reason is that by using our hands we don’t have to wash an extra spoon!

    Thank you for your question.

  3. Paul Said,

With the health benefits of Kefir and the lifestyle on the homestead, I’m wondering how often any of you get sick? I’m really interested if its “all that” compared to my regular urban life?

  4. pockets Said,

    Dear Paul,

That is certainly a fair and useful question. As it turns out, we practically never get sick! There are a couple of family members with allergies who do better when drinking raw milk and so on but almost no sickness. And if there is sickness, it generally passes quickly and without a lot of fanfare.

    Thank you for your question,
    Leslie

  5. Paul Said,

Thanks for your reply. I’m interested in trying out raw milk myself, but here in Canada it is strictly forbidden to even mention the word. The lady we get our farm eggs from was threatened to stop giving it to her own kids. Hopefully I can find someone willing to deal! It’s kind of funny now that I think about it, talking about raw milk almost like its a drug!

  6. Aubrey Said,

I miss your blog posts! I hope all is well with your family. Update if/when you can! :)

  7. Marilyn Said,

    Hi Leslie,

Just came across your website and I think it’s great! It would be great if you can post some videos on how to make cheese (both hard and soft), as well as a video showing how to do mozzarella cheese, which I’ve been dying to learn how to do. Also, I’ve been wanting to make some kefir, and would love to order some grains from you. Are you still accepting and shipping orders for kefir grains? Please let me know ’cause if you are I will be making a donation asap. Thanks!

  8. pockets Said,

    Hi Marilyn,

Thank you for the video suggestions. We have been wanting to make exactly those videos for ages. Making videos takes a lot of time and a computer that is working a lot faster than ours is at the moment! We are bound to get to them, though. Thank you for the extra motivation.

Yes, we are still accepting and shipping orders of kefir grains. We will be on the lookout for your donation and get them sent off to you.

    Thank you for writing.

    With warm regards,
    Leslie
